New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

INDEPENDENT REAL ESTATE

FEBRUARY 1, 2024

THE STYLE SPECIALIST

by Christine S. Cowles

I

f you’re like me, you rang in the New Year with a few resolutions. Not too many — just one or two — and with every intention of sticking to them throughout the year, or at least through early February. Perhaps you’re resolved to start juicing, working out more, or getting that annual exam you’ve postponed for a few years. But what about New Year’s resolutions for your home? I firmly believe that our homes are more than just four walls; rather, the health of a home can play a role in one’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Most of us probably spend more than 50 percent of our day in our home, and the amount of clutter, allergens, and “stuff ” can impact our productivity, mood, and happiness. This year, consider adding one of these resolutions to enhance the space you inhabit.

you believe you’ll wear again when you just lose those nagging extra 10 pounds. How many times have you gone out and purchased something, only to find two of the same tucked away on a closet shelf? Decluttering can help save money as you find and organize your belongings and avoid buying duplicates. Also, a good deep clean can remove dust and pollen that may be contributing to your allergies. Decluttering can be overwhelming, so start with one room or closet at a time. Donate clothing you haven’t worn in more than a year and toss expired perishable goods. And if you’re storing furniture in the garage because it came from a family member but deep down you know it’s not your style, it’s time to “Marie Kondo” it and pass it along to someone who will love and appreciate it. Store like with like: Recently, I went searching for

Resolve to clear and declutter one room or area each month: Over time, it’s normal to accumulate belong-

ings, especially as we move through life’s chapters. Getting married usually means you’ll be gifted kitchen wares, while having children comes with acquiring toys, pack ’n’ plays, and other belongings. Yet this inevitably turns into having spare linens without a match, kids’ toys that you think they’ll still use, or clothing that

packaging tape in my home and had to remember where I kept it. Would it be with office supplies or wrapping paper? Or did I last use it and throw it in my catch-all bowl? To my surprise, I found packaging tape in three separate locations, none of which were the ones I just mentioned. Perhaps I’m a little too organized (or, at least, I would like to be) but this search for packaging tape drove me nuts. So, once you’ve cleared out what you don’t need, why not organize what you do have following one simple rule: Store “like” with “like.” Essentially, get into the habit of being organized and free up time for something more important. Pay attention to neglected areas: This one might actu-

ally be the most important, so listen up and learn from me — a lesson I learned the hard way. I live in a condo and have always carried condo/homeowner’s insurance. So when my downstairs neighbor came over to tell me that there was water coming down into his ceiling, I thought, “Well, at least I have insurance, and

this is what it’s for.” Turns out I had a leaking toilet seal, which was considered negligence by my insurance company. Guess who had to pay for the repairs out of pocket? You got it. If you own a home and don’t perform annual maintenance checks, please start doing so. Call your insurance company for a list of recommendations. Start the year by servicing your HVAC system, cleaning out your dryer lint ducts, checking your gutters, and inspecting for termites. Additionally, it’s a good idea to get a licensed plumber to check your water heater, supply lines, and shutoff valve to make sure everything is working properly. These aren’t the fun jobs, but doing them regularly may spare you major damage (and unwanted bills) in the future. I’d love to see your photos of your organized home! Rooted S.B. Hosts Plantsgiving Event

Board: Jenifer Swartzentruber, RDN, CDE (educator); Daniela Cadavid, DDS; George Ayoub, PhD (co-vice chair); Beth Skidmore (chair and executive lead); Lacey Baldiviez, PhD (treasurer); Emma Malina (co-vice chair); and Angela Manavella (secretary)

R

ooted Santa Barbara, a relatively new and very important organization focused on plant-based nutrition education, hosted its second annual Plantsgiving event on January 21. The nonprofit, which has attracted prominent advocates and partnered with key community organizations, is playing a crucial role in improving health by providing free and low-cost bilingual education and tools for individuals and organizations. The focus, according to Chair and Executive Lead Beth Skidmore, is on serving community members with the greatest barriers to good health. In this early phase, it is working principally through healthcare workers and other direct service providers who support them — training the trainers — who each have their own broad reach in the community. Rooted’s team includes community health workers, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, physicians, college students, and professors. About 60 supporters gathered at the Foodbank of S.B. County’s Nutrition Resource Center to enjoy the Plantsgiving reception and dinner and learn more about Rooted. JD Roth, the creator of the TV shows The Biggest Loser, MasterChef, and Extreme Weight Loss, shared insight on the challenges confronting plant-based-diet advocates. Television shows are filler around commercials, not the other way around, according to Roth, and the commercials are about getting viewers to consume their food and beverages. He recounted battling the head of the network on The Biggest Loser, a show about eating better and moving more, when the network, in search of sponsorship dollars, wanted to rename the scale the Coca-Cola Scale. In light of commercial pressures, Roth emphasized the need to create a whole movement focused on plant-based diets. He noted the great medical advances that enable us to live longer, but stressed the importance of plant-based nutrition as a determinant to the quality of that life. He lauded Rooted S.B. for assuming its educational role. Skidmore paid tribute to event honorees Yvette Birch Giller and the Mosher Foundation for their support. Skidmore related how she encountered serious challenges over the past 10 years in garnering local interest in plantbased diets and how from the start, Giller, president and COO of the Mosher Foundation, made her feel that her mission was possible. The Foundation has provided advisory and financial support, including a $50,000 grant. Giller eloquently shared with guests, “What makes

Honoree Mosher Foundation Chair and CEO Edward Birch, Mosher Foundation Trustee and Education Program Specialist Suzanne Birch, Mosher Foundation President and COO Yvette Birch Giller, and Rooted S.B. Health and Nutrition Advisory Council Member Dr. Frederic Kass

Community Advisory Council Member Lori Tremer Huey with National Advisory Council Members JD Roth and Chrissy Roth

Rooted truly special to me and the Mosher Foundation is its commitment and investment in supporting people with the greatest barriers to good health. Rooted is pioneering nutrition education in Santa Barbara. The commitment to preventing, arresting, reversing, or delaying approximately 80 percent of chronic diseases through a focus on plantbased eating patterns is not only commendable, but aligns seamlessly with our shared vision for a healthier tomorrow for all. “This forward-thinking approach acknowledges the critical role that education plays in fostering a community-wide shift toward healthier choices. We believe that by equipping healthcare professionals with the tools and knowledge to advocate for plant-based eating, Rooted is making a lasting impact on the future of healthcare.” Skidmore announced the launch of a $500,000 capital campaign. So far, the organization, which has the S.B. Foundation as its fiscal sponsor, has been a volunteerdriven effort, with contracts providing revenue to staff specific projects. Now it needs an executive director and staff for its expanding and crucially important work in our community. Rooted has collaborated with some key local organizations. With Sansum Diabetes Research Institute (SDRI), Rooted formed the Santa Barbara Nutrition Health Coalition, comprising local businesses and organizations. Upon meeting with Skidmore, SDRI’s new Director of Science Dr. Sam Klein proposed that the Coalition’s first project be plant-forward research at SDRI. SDRI then contracted with Rooted to write the dietary

curriculum and train the community health workers who will guide participants in three plant-forward, culturally focused pilot studies in the Santa Barbara Hispanic community. In the trainings, according to Skidmore, the community health workers leaped into the plant-based nutrition. Feedback from the workers on the benefits abounded, from losing weight to feeling better overall to saving money. With a master’s in applied clinical nutrition (MSACN) and a husband with Type 1 diabetes, Skidmore has deep knowledge and passion about the benefits of a plant-based diet for those with diabetes — lowering risk, improving, and potentially reversing Type 2 diabetes, as well as other conditions. It changed the trajectory of her husband’s life. Skidmore doesn’t proselytize; rather, she softly but persuasively speaks with deep knowledge, kindness, and passion. With the Foodbank of S.B. County, Rooted developed a series of two 10-day Spanish language programs for the Foodbank’s Spanish language Facebook page, which reached 4,800 community members in 2022, and is still available, in English and Spanish, on Rooted’s website. Last year, Rooted partnered with the S.B. Neighborhood Clinics (SBNC) to train its team on plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. With SBNC nurse practitioner Vanessa Atyabi, it designed a nutrition education handout and posters with links to Rooted’s online resources. The Breast Cancer Resource Center retained Rooted to produce a 10-part series of virtual plant-based nutrition and food skills classes, which continue to be available online. Next up is trainings for Savie Health’s clinical team in Lompoc.

F

or several decades, we have been told that natural gas is the bridge fuel in the transition from coal to renewable energy. During this period, carbon emissions from American power plants shrank by 40 percent. Hundreds of coal-fired plants have been retired, many being replaced by natural gas plants. For years, methane leakage — from extraction wells, processing plants, and

pipelines that transport the gas — has been a concern. Why? Because methane is 80-90 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas than carbon dioxide, at least in the short term, and natural gas is almost entirely made up of methane. Since most of the data on leakage has come from the gas industry, the figures published led us to believe that little gas escaped, that the problem was insignificant. However, as independent researchers, using
