CA Rangeland Trust Celebrates 25 Years and 90 Saved Ranches

On February 16, the California Rangeland Trust (CRT) held a gathering for about 165 guests at the Santa Barbara Club, where they celebrated this nonprofit’s 25 years of work obtaining conservation easements from ranchers to conserve precious ranch land. The easements allow ranchers to continue their operations, but limit specified development rights in perpetuity.

Guests enjoyed an extended reception on the grounds of the club, with a gourmet taco buffet and live music, before being seated inside for the program. Dick Gibford kicked off the program with an entertaining cowboy poetry reading.

Board Chair Andy Mills welcomed guests and reflected on how in the early years, CRT’s outreach to ranchers was met with considerable resistance. At that time, Mills noted, CRT also faced the task of educating state leaders that cattle ranchers are the best stewards of their land. Easements were obtained, slowly at first, and to date, CRT remarkably has helped conserve 90 ranches encompassing 371,000 acres. Five of those ranches, totaling 17,342 acres, are in S.B. County.

CEO Michael Delbar shared the recent success of CRT’s largest private fundraising effort raising $1 million to conserve the Spanish Ranch in New Cuyama, which along with public funding, will enable an easement transaction to close hopefully by the end of this year.

Delbar noted the importance of celebrating CRT’s successes, but quickly turned to pointing out how many ranchers are fighting every day to maintain viable agricultural businesses, that “we are fighting for our future by keeping ranchers ranching.”

A panel discussion followed with first-generation ranchers Richard and Sharon Kline from Rancho San Lorenzo in Los Alamos and

with seventh-generation rancher Elizabeth Poett from Rancho San Julian in Lompoc (daughter of S.B. Independent Editor-in-Chief Marianne Partridge).

Richard Kline shared how CRT staff took them hand-in-hand to get a conservation easement and that they couldn’t be happier with the result. Sharon explained how they were lucky to have a vernal pond that with rain became a 10-acre refuge for tiger salamanders. Given its endangered species status, the salamanders caused the government to look more favorably on the easement application.

According to Richard Kline, the dream of having a ranch is all too easily a nightmare. He pointed to the challenges of having adequate water, grass to feed the cattle, property needing repairs, and vet bills to pay. Easements help with all the expenses, Klein explained, by providing financial assistance and a tax break, allowing ranches to remain in operation, which benefits ranchers and the community, today and into the future.

Poett, who was raised on the ranch, shared that there are many challenges in working on the ranch with a large family, but her parents instilled in her the importance of family, the importance of the ranch, and making it all work. “We don’t have a plumber; we are the plumber,” Poett related, “and we have to weld and fix the fence and make it work, from generation to generation, including working with our parents, our cousins, and our children.” It’s through working together that ranching stays from generation to generation, Poett said.

CRT currently has 90 ranching families awaiting funding for conservation easements. A large chunk of funding comes from federal and state sources, but CRT also relies heavily on private funding to meet agency matching requirements and to otherwise supplement government funding.

Biochar is a super-charged charcoal, created when organic matter wood, grain stalks, grasses, peanut shells, etc. is burned slowly with almost no oxygen in an enclosed chamber at nearly 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The result is a stable crystalline

Message From the President

substance rich in carbon that is resistant to decomposition. The pyrolysis (burning) creates small chambers capable of holding moisture, nutrients, and a diversity of microbes.

As a soil regenerator, biochar works best when combined with compost or livestock manure, additions that provide microbes and nutrients. By itself, it is not

a fertilizer. Biochar varies greatly depending on the organics or feedstock used. At its best, biochar increases agricultural productivity, improves soil health and resilience, transforms a waste product into a resource, and helps resolve the climate crisis by sequestering carbon. There has also been a lot of promising exploration and development of the use of biochar in industrial applications.

GOING GREEN

Because of the organic feedstock used in its production, biochar is sometimes considered the successor to biofuels. Such fuels have an uneven history, since sometimes they add to deforestation and greenhouse-gas emissions, and even at times deplete oxygen levels. Biochar raises alkalinity levels when applied to fields, making it critical that soils be tested and analyzed before deciding on its addition.

When it becomes a part of nature’s cycles, biochar can offer many benefits. Ten years ago, an Australian farmer started feeding the substance, mixed with molasses, to his cattle. The biochar was subsequently distributed by the cattle across pastures as manure. Dung beetles quickly buried it underground up to 15 inches in depth. Within three years, scientific tests showed a significant improvement in the

soil. Moreover, the work of the beetles took the manure’s nitrogen underground, preventing it from becoming nitrous oxide, a serious contributor to global warming. Another benefit of adding some biochar to cattle feed is a reduction of the methane they emit from digestion and burping. The production of biochar can be costly depending on the feedstock and transportation, but a financial analysis showed a positive return for the system developed by the Australian farmer and the potential for rapid commercialization.

When biochar is incorporated as an additive or component in nature’s processes, its positives can far outweigh its negatives. The organic feedstock needs to be agricultural or forestry waste and not a monoculture product. When the focus is on biological principles and the promotion of life, biochar has much to offer. In agriculture, it requires a shift from chemical fertilizers and pesticides to fostering soils rich in microbes, a move from an antibiotic to a probiotic approach.

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH IN SANTA BARBARA

Women's History Month, which takes place in March, is a time to honor and commemorate women's achievements to culture and society. Women have always had significant roles in society, striving for justice and equality, breaking down obstacles, and inspiring future generations. Our very own Santa Barbara, California, has produced a number of notable women who have made their impact on history. I did some research and wanted to share a small sampling of all the amazing women here in Santa Barbara.

Strong women who battled for their rights and the rights of others have a long history in Santa Barbara. Pearl Chase is among the most significant female figures in Santa Barbara's past. Chase dedicated her life to preserving and enhancing Santa Barbara's natural environment and cultural history. She had a significant part in the creation of public parks and gardens in the city and formed the Community Arts Organization. The numerous public areas that Chase helped construct carry on her legacy and everyone can be inspired by her dedication to maintaining Santa Barbara's distinctive character and beauty. Historian Walker A. Tompkins summarized her influence on the city by saying, "She did more to beautify her adopted hometown of Santa Barbara than any other individual." WOW!

Dr. Lois Phillips is another outstanding Santa Barbara woman. Author and leadership specialist Phillips has spent more than 30 years advancing diversity and empowering women in the workplace. She has authored

several books on diversity and leadership and has received recognition for her work in the area. Dr. Phillips has a particular interest in Glass Ceiling programs advancing women’s careers and cultivating women’s Board leadership.

We cannot discuss outstanding women from Santa Barbara without mentioning Madame Ganna Walska. Walska was a Polish opera singer and a passionate gardener who created one of the most beautiful and unique gardens in the world at her home in Santa Barbara. She purchased the historic 37-acre "Cuesta Linda" estate in Montecito near Santa Barbara, California, intending to use it as a retreat for Tibetan monks. Due to restrictions during the war, the monks were not allowed to travel there. So she renamed her estate Lotusland, after the sacred flower in Tibetan religions. Lotusland garden is a masterpiece of horticulture and design featuring exotic plants and sculptures from around the world. Walska's legacy lives on in the thousands of visitors who come to Lotusland every year to experience its beauty and tranquility.

Diana Bull is an excellent example of women in real estate. She began her real estate career in 1971 at 22 and

became a broker two years later. She owned and managed her own real estate and mortgage companies for over 40 years. She served as President of the Santa Barbara Association of REALTORS® in 1982 and has been involved at the local, state, and national levels ever since. I have had the privilege to attend both the California Association of REALTORS® and National Association of REALTORS® conferences with her. She is so well respected, and it's an honor to watch her in action representing Santa Barbara.

Of course, I couldn't write an article on amazing women without including my mom Jane, wife Melissa, and daughter Caitlin. These three women continue to motivate and inspire me through their successes, strength, and love. Thank you all for what you have done for me and the others around you. I am so blessed to have my daughter Caitlin continue my legacy and impact the world in her unique way.

Women's History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. Santa Barbara is home to many exceptional women who have impacted their community and beyond. As we celebrate Women's History Month, remember and honor the many women in and outside of Santa Barbara who have worked to make the world a better place.
