The Giffin & Crane team also restored the original brick fireplace and installed a new hearth, along with the living room’s exposed Douglas fir beams and gables. Outside, Toni Heren Garden Designs headed up the landscaping.  “Smaller homes are easier to care for and more efficient, too,” said Bruce Giffin, the now-retired company cofounder. “They’re often comfortable without a lot of complex ity. Ensemble Theatre Hosts Curtain Up! Fundraiser

With 140 supporters in attendance, the event netted about $200,000 for ETC’s performances and educationDuringprograms.thecocktail hour, guests socialized while enjoying music by Chris Fossek and perus ing silent auction items, including a painting by Ruth Ellen Hoag, which the artist was creating on stage throughout the evening. Guests were welcomed by Board President Simon Williams, who shared that the upcoming season will be the most exciting, relevant, and funny season there has ever been. Artistic Direc tor Jonathan Fox remarked on how last season had its challenges, but ETC successfully put on five plays with no COVID cancellations. What’s more, Fox noted, the season provided proof that there is nothing like live theater actually being in the theater with the performers. Guests were treated to an enchanting perfor mance by Linda Purl, whom many supporters knew from last season’s production of Tenderly In between brilliantly performed songs with a live band, Purl entertained guests with short, amusing life stories. She expressed her gratitude to guests for their support, noting how impor tant the live theater arts are to her in processing life not as an actress, but as a citizen. Also in attendance was her partner, actor Patrick Duffy. Fox gave a glimpse of the upcoming season, including the opening with Carmen Jones, Oscar Hammerstein’s all-Black adaption of the opera Carmen set during World War II in a parachute factory. Guests were treated to a sneak peak of this: an impressive performance by Constance Jewell Lopez, who will play Frankie in the play, accompanied on the piano by Music Director William Foster McDaniel. Next up, according to Fox, will be the funniest version ever of A Christmas Carol, adapted by Patrick Barlow and directed by Jamie Torcellini.

Selling Kabul is a gripping thriller, taking place in real time, about an Afghan who was an inter preter for the U.S. and after the withdrawal is being hunted down by the Taliban. The Children is a complex, funny thriller about a couple living on the coast of the U.K. outside a nuclear reac tor during a flood. Seared is about a Brooklyn restaurant where the chef’s scallop dish scores a rave in a magazine, and then the chef refuses to make the dish because he is too much of an artist.

In an interview, Managing Director Scott DeVine related how returning to full opera tions after the COVID shutdown has been chal lenging, but ETC has been fortunate to receive support from donors and those who purchase tickets. The upcoming season also presents chal lenges, with COVID continuing and inflation driving up overall costs by 20 percent. DeVine expressed gratitude for “ever-generous donors, without whom professional theatre could not survive in Santa Barbara.” Donations account for more than 60 percent of ETC’s annual operating income.ETCoffers acting classes for kids and adults in the fall, winter, and spring, and its Young Actors Conservatory offers programs in the summer. Full scholarships are provided to about onethird of youth, and some youth receive partial scholarships There’s also an annual, free fourmonth-long Playwrights Festival for teens that includes mentoring by professional playwrights and a public festival of readings with professional actors and directors. Special student matinees, including four this upcoming season, bring area high school students to the theater. ETC provides advance study guides, a pre-show workshop, tickets, a post-performance talk with the cast, and trans portation, all free of charge, to students in S.B. County schools.

Q: Marsha, I am ready to put my home on the market. My real estate agent is urging me to hire a professional stager. She says the home will sell faster and for a higher price, but it’s expensive, and I’d rather not spend the money. We are in a hot market, and I’m not sure it’s worth the money.

An important point is that staging is not meant to hide any deficiencies or flaws of the residence. Legally and ethically, the sellers must disclose all known defects. A stager is simply enhancing the buy ers’ aesthetic experience. The home inspector will discover and disclose any hidden issues, and if buy ers learn the sellers tried to use staging as camou flage, all good will and feel ings generated will be lost. The sellers will regret the deception.Some people might think, “I have all this furniture and artwork; I’ll stage the home myself!” Before you go down that route, let’s look at what stagers have to offer. First, they are talented designers who have the skill, knowledge, and experience to make your home look its best. They also maintain an inventory of furniture, photos, paintings, rugs, and all items relevant to a household. Finally, they will hire the muscle to move the furnishings in and out. Leave the staging to the pros; you’ll be glad you did. So how much does staging cost? For a three-bedroom, two-bath house, you’ll be looking in the range of $3,000 to $5,000. After reading this, I hope you see that a better question is: how much will not staging cost you?

#3 Create a Dedicated Space for Homework

Pro tip: Use hotel breakfast bars as your inspiration. Kids love picking their own meal from an array of food, so copy that look on the kitchen counter. A few back-to-school hiccups are probably inevitable. But with some simple hacks for an organized home, the transition can be a whole lot easier.

#2 Add Places to Store Books Make sure your child has a place to store textbooks, library books, and their own books. Install shelves that are low enough for them to reach. If they already have shelves in their rooms, organize them just like you did their closet so they can find the books they need, fast. You don’t want them to miss the bus because they’re looking for their math book.

#7 Set Up a Back-to-School Breakfast Station Feeding children as they rush out the door to school is tough. Make it simpler by setting up a spot in the kitchen with easy-to-prepare food so your kids can eat on the run. Put out airtight containers of cereal, bowls, packets of instant oatmeal, and fruit in a basket. Make sure milk, yogurt, and other healthy breakfast foods are in easy reach in the fridge.

#5 Create a Back-to-School Communications Com mand Center That’s a fancy way of saying you need a space where you can coordinate class and work schedules, homework assignments, school activities, and reading lists. The center can be as simple as a calendar and whiteboard on a kitchen wall. Or you can make it more functional by adding hanging bins for folders, a message board, or a small table or desk where you can put an inbox, a bill holder, and a supply of envelopes and pens.

#4 Set Up an Organized Drop Zone in Your Entryway You know the drill. Your kids come home from school and throw everything from backpacks to sneakers on the floor when they step in the door. To keep your entryway from looking like a tornado went through, turn it into an organized drop zone. Create storage space for backpacks, shoes, sports equipment, hats, coats, and other gear. Put up cubbies for shoes, shelves for books, and hooks for jackets, backpacks, and tote bags. You’ll declutter the space and ramp up efficiency.

#6 Get the Kids’ Bathrooms in Order Make it easier for your kids to get out the door in the morning by arranging their bathroom for maximum efficiency. Sort their bathroom essentials by category — toothbrushes, hairbrushes, towels, shampoos, and soaps. Organize them in cabinets, drawers, or bins. You want to make items easy to find so your kids can brush their teeth and hair and wash their face fast.

#1 Organize Your Kids’ Bedroom Closets and Drawers Help your kids get dressed in the morning by organizing their clothes. Arrange the clothes in see-through bins and on hangers so they can find what they want to wear and get dressed in a hurry. That way, your child won’t waste valuable time rum maging around for matching socks or their favorite shirt. Pro tip: Label the drawers, bins, and closet organizers with the type of clothing that goes in them. If your child knows which drawer is for socks and which bin is for T-shirts, they can stash their clothes in the right places so an organized closet will stay that way.

Create a homework station where your children can study and work on their book reports. For younger kids who need parental supervision, set up a space in the kitchen or living area so you can make sure they stay on task.
